The Ultimate Summer Series: Half Time

0J9A9842_2Hey friends! It’s mid July and we are half way through the Ultimate Summer Series, and that means we’re also half way through summer vacation.

If we can take a moment and be honest, a lot of those good intentions of unplugging, unwinding and adventuring may have gotten sidetracked with this little thing called “life.” Maybe some of those bucket list plans have gotten crossed off (yay!) but some may not ever get to be… I’m here today to just send some love and encouragement and remind you that this time of summer needs one more ingredient: Grace.

I saw a meme on Facebook and it immediately brought the content of this post to my mind.

Some of you, like me, probably have seen this meme and gave a good chuckle at the reality of it all. But, I’m willing to guess it probably put a little sting in the mom-heart of some of us too. It is so common to get stuck in a summer rut and start to hit the easy button of going to the same playground every day, allowing more screentime for sake of quiet moments, staying home versus reaching out to friends for play dates, etc. If you’re finding yourself in that phase- it’s time to give yourself grace and revisit your summer schedule. I’m going to share a few tips I’ve learned along the way in hopes that it will give you a little more pep in your step as we round out the second half of summer.

Go back to those things that first sparked your summer bucket list. Revisit the two critical questions: What makes your kids feel most loved? What was a favorite summer memory of theirs and of yours? Maybe it’s time for a family meeting to go over the remaining bucket list items or to just generate new ideas to realign your plans with the responses to those questions. Lacking ideas?? Head to my pin board and gather up what sounds like a good fit for your family.

Maybe it’s time to shake up the morning routine. Instead of beginning the day with cartoons and cereal, start a cooking challenge with your kids to try new breakfast foods from around the world. How about taking breakfast on a walk to the park before it gets too hot outside?? Have your kids help you pack breakfast snacks in little brown bags and hand out around the neighborhood. As the summer progresses and temperature rises, the morning seems to be the best time to get some fresh air!

Remember: Don’t mom alone. Sure it’s a hassle to pack up suits and towels and the entire pantry of snacks to head out for a play date, but the community of support, laughs and adventures is waiting for you. Chances are, your mom friends are feeling the slump right now too. Take turns having the kids over to each other’s house- a change of scenery and toys might ignite new creativity and imagination. I know the more I withdraw from friends and family for sake of convenience of just stay home, the higher level of crazy we all start to feel! Don’t keep your struggles inside- reach out to friends, find a moms group that meets for playgroups in your area, or you might just have to kick it old school and meet a new mom at the local playground or pool.

Whatever your summer woes and wins may look like, just remember to wrap your intentions with grace. Give yourself margin of downtime and quiet moments with your kids if you’re feeling run down and always on the go. Give yourself a pat on the back for each summer victory and celebrate your good ideas by sharing with others. Give yourself support when you feel alone by reaching out to your best mom friends.

I hope those few tips gave you some food for thought and some ideas of how you want to finish out your summer. Sending you all love, hugs and all the grace!!!!

Speaking of grace, I wanted to give a big and warm Thank You to our friends at Hawthorne Supply Co. for allowing me ample time this summer to showcase their gorgeous new fabric collection, Siren Song. In the midst of our Ultimate Summer, taking beach photos took the back seat to having unplugged family beach picnics, hiking adventures, etc. but we finally made it happen!!
